Courses for deacons & diaconal workers

The School of Theology of Charles Sturt University

offers a range of courses suitable for the theological development and on-going learning of deacons and diaconal workers.

All courses are available as distance education courses.

The University Certificate in Theology (8 subjects) is a basic undergraduate course for those wishing to ‘dip a toe in the theological waters’ and explore the Diaconate as a calling.

Graduate Diploma of Theology replaces The Graduate Certificate in Diaconate Studies. Students will be able to undertake subjects of relevance to diaconal ministry, most of which were in the old Grad. Dip.

The school also offers BTh, BTh(Hons), MMin, MTh , DMin and PhD courses.

Some deacons may also wish to explore some of the Graduate Certificate courses offered by the School’s Centre for Ageing & Pastoral Studies (CAPS). CAPS’ latest offering is a Master of Arts (Pastoral Care & Ageing).

Holding Crosses

Holding Cross

Holding crosses have been used for prayer and meditation for a very long time and are fashioned in such a way as to sit comfortably in the palm of the hand as a focus. In some areas these crosses are hard to find as there is no local supplier. This got Anne Ranse thinking about where someone has time on their hands to make these crosses. I approached the chaplain of the Cooma Correctional Centre in NSW and, following discussions with the Correction Centre authorities, we now have holding crosses being made there. What a powerful image. Holding crosses being made by the inmates. The crosses come packaged with the text of the prayer of St Francis of Assisi: ‘Lord, make me an instrument of your peace….’

The latest batch has been made with timber from the Canberra bush fires of 2003 that caused huge devastation.

These crosses sell for $20:00. The full amount goes to the inmates for materials and cost. If you would like to purchase one or more of these crosses then email Anne Ranse or post a request to 6 Lindrum Crescent Holt 2615 ACT. The cost also covers postage.

Anne's Reflections

Whenever Anne is out and about she reflects on what she sees and hears. And while she is doing that she often takes photos. Check out Anne's BlogSpot for some interesting reading for reflection.
